◆本CD解説より（大意）◆
16世紀を通じて、スペインでも他のヨーロッパ諸国同様、撥弦楽器（ビウエラ、リュート、ギター、ハープ、さらにはハープシコード）の伴奏で歌う習慣が広まっていった。前世紀からすでに、器楽伴奏による歌は王侯貴族の娯楽になっていた。16世紀に最も影響力のあった作品の一つであるバルダッサーレ・カスティリオーネ（教皇の大使としてスペインに赴いた）の『宮廷人』によれば、廷臣の教育と身嗜みの上で音楽は重要な役割を演じており、ビウエラ伴奏の歌は音楽における最も高尚な表現の一つであった。リュート曲集に歌曲をほとんど収めることがなかった他のヨーロッパ諸国のリュート奏者とは異なり、ビウエラ奏者は皆、声と楽器のための音楽に曲集の一章をまるごと捧げた。
最初のビウエラ曲集であるルイス・ミランの「Libro de Música de Vihuela de mano intitulado El Maestro」は、1536年にバレンシアで出版された。後続のカスティーリャのビウエラ奏者たちと違って、ミランは他の作曲家によるポリフォニー声楽曲のビウエラ用編曲は含めず、自作曲だけを提供している。

モンセラート・フィゲーラス（ソプラノ）とホプキンソン・スミス（ビウエラ）によるルイス・ミランのビウエラ歌曲集。ホプキンソンのビウエラが織り成す緻密で繊細な鈍色の地紋に、フィゲーラスのソプラノの金糸が織り込まれて、典雅にして耽美的な音のつづれ織りが繰り広げられております。「El Maestro」の「I」はビウエラ独奏曲集ですが、それもホプキンソン・スミスの演奏で同じレーベルからリリースされています。
