◆本CD解説（Mary Springfels）より（大意）◆

好古家アンソニー・ウッド（1632～1695）をして英国随一のリュート奏者と言わしめたジョン・ウィルソン（1595～1674）は、若い頃にシェイクスピアと知り合いだったかもしれないし、老境に入ってから若いパーセルが歌うのをきいたかもしれない。ヘンリー・ローズ（1595～1662）に次いで王政復古以前の英国で最も人気のあったソングライターで、その歌曲は1665年以前に出版されたソングブックのほとんどに採用されている。
ヘンリー・バトラー（？～1652）は影響力のあった英国カトリック音楽家の小グループの一員で、ダウランド同様、より自由に活動できる外国の宮廷に仕事の場を選んだ。彼についての情報は主にスペインの記録文書に残されている。すぐれたヴィオール奏者であった。
マシュー・ロック（1621～1677）はこの三人（ウィルソン、バトラー、ロック）のなかでは唯一、死後にその名声を残すことができた。王政復古後、宮廷の音楽サークルに入り、1662年にはチャールズ2世付きの作曲家（composer-in-ordinary）になっていた。
#4、5、24はジョン・プレイフォード（1623～1686）編の楽譜集「The Division Violin」（1684）からとった。
