◆本CD解説（ジェレミー・バーロウ）より（大意）◆
「乞食オペラ」（The Begger's Opera）は現代的な意味での「オペラ」などでは全くなくて、ジョン・ゲイ（John Gay、1685～1732）による、60曲以上の短い歌を散りばめた歌芝居であって、ヘンデル流のイタリア風オペラへの反動として、1728年にロンドンで初演されたが、ロバート・ウォルポールの腐敗政治に対する諷刺も随所に見られる。
乞食オペラの劇中歌は当時の流行歌を取り入れたもので、ジョン・ゲイがみつくろって替え歌にしたもの。音楽監督であったドイツ生まれの帰化作曲家ジョン・クリストファー（ヨハン・クリストフ）・ペープシュ（John Christopher Pepusch、1667～1752）がハーモニーをつけ、上演のためにアレンジした。楽譜は失われてしまったが、「オペラ」第三版（1729）のメロディーにベース・ラインが添えてあり、ペープシュのハーモニゼーション（和声付け）の片鱗はうかがえる。
曲の出所は様々であるが、全体的に高水準で、なかにはパーセルやヘンデル等のものも含まれるが、元ネタ探しは困難である。多くは当時の最新曲だが、「グリーンスリーヴス」のようにエリザベス朝にさかのぼるものもあり、歳月を経て発展し変更を加えられた過程が見て取れる。当時の流行を反映したスコットランドやフランスのメロディもある。
このレコードでは、劇中歌のうちから9曲を選んで、その発展の跡を辿ってみた。

ブックレット（全32頁）に Jeremy Barlow による解説（原文英語、仏訳・独訳併載）、歌詞（英語、仏訳・独訳）。
1982年にLPでリリースされたジェレミー・バーロウ指揮ザ・ブロードサイド・バンドによる「乞食オペラの歌」（録音は1981年）のCD化です。これはジョン・ゲイの「乞食オペラ」そのものの演奏ではなくて（それは同じバーロウ／ブロードサイド・バンドによる1991年の録音が Hyperion から2枚組CDでリリースされています）、9曲の劇中歌を、それぞれのオリジナル形や別ヴァージョンとセットにして聞き比べるという趣向になっています。
