◆本CD解説（Martin Best）より大意◆　

ギラウト・リキエル（ギロー・リキエ）は11世紀末にフランス南西部で起ったトゥルバドゥールの長い伝統の最後の代表者である。最初のトゥルバドゥールはアキテーヌ公ギエム（ギョーム）9世だったが、どちらも唯一無二の存在である。ギエムが始めたことは封建領主や教会権力に対する抜本的な挑戦であったが、オクシタニアのトゥルバドゥールたちは自己表現の技法を磨くのに夢中だったので、それがどんな結果を引き起こすか思ってもみなかった。即ちインノケンティウス3世の呼びかけにより、カタリ派の手中にあったアルビを中心に隆盛していた異端を打ち砕くための1209年のアルビジョア十字軍の結成である。フランスはトゥールーズ伯領を手中に収めたが、35年におよぶ戦いのあいだに100万人の死者が出た。しかし異端は死に絶えることなく、ルターによって受け継がれることになるが、事実上オクシタニア、プロヴァンスは壊滅した。
このディスクはアルビジョア戦争開戦の喚起から始まる。シモン・ド・モンフォールはフランス人、バーガンディー人、フランドル人、ノルマン人、それにラングドックを裏切った騎士たち、から成る軍を率いて、1209年7月22日、ベジエを襲撃した。
リキエルが生まれたのはその約20年後のことだが、作品にはこの事件の影響がうかがわれる。リキエルはトゥルバドゥールの古い芸術とその価値観を信じ、庇護者（patron）を求めた。1254年頃にはナルボンヌにいたが、1270年にカスティーリャのアルフォンソ10世の宮廷に赴き、そこに1280年まで留まり、最後の12年間はロデーズ伯アンリ2世のもとで過ごした。このディスクはリキエルの詩人としての評価を求めての放浪の跡を辿るものである。

◆本CDについて◆　

マーティン・ベスト中世アンサンブルによる『最後のトゥルバドゥール：ギラウト・リキエルの芸術とその時代』。1981年にLPとしてリリースされたもののCD化です。

ブックレット（全16頁）に Martin Best による解説（英文）と楽曲解説（英文、歌詞の原文と英訳を含む）、演奏者紹介（英文）。

アダム・ジョン・ムンテ（Adam John Munthe）の歴史小説のベジエでの無差別殺戮のくだりの朗読（英語）で始まる本作は、反戦・反体制色が濃いです（「Beziers has fallen. They're dead. Clerks, women, children. No quarter. They killed Christians too.」「We have life to resist.」）。やはり反戦的な内容のリキエルの詩#17（メロディは現存せず）と13世紀の叙事詩からの引用#18も英訳で朗読されています（この3曲のテキストはブックレットには掲載されていません）。楽曲解説では#16のメロディは「レノン／マッカートニーの「ノルウェーの森」を思わせなくもない」と指摘されています。
