「The title song of this record comes from Sharp and Baring-Gould's 'English Folk Songs for Schools'. *Hares on the Mountain* is one of the best known of the light-hearted love songs of Southern England and comes from Sharp's 'Folk Songs from Somerset'. *Hori-Horo* is a Hebridean-New Zealand song of the waulking type taught to Shirley's Uncle George by a New Zealander when they were both serving in the Eighth Army in the Desert Campaign of 1942-3 and is obviously a translation of a Gaelic song. *The Bonny Irish Boy* is one of the many songs showing the recent influence of the Irish on Southern England; the words are from Kidson's 'Traditional Tunes' and the tune is traditional. *The Tailor and the Mouse* is one of the well known children's songs from Sharp's 'English Folk Songs for Schools', *The Lady and the Swine* is another children's song printed in Kidson's '75 Traditional Nursery Rhymes'. *Turpin Hero* is a version of the folk ballad about the legendary highwayman, which Shirley learnt at school; the tune is traditional. *The Cuckoo* is another well known English folk song taught to Shirley by her Great Grandmother. *The Bonny Labouring Boy* is a 19th century Southern English lyric song, in praise of the farm labourer, which Shirley's Grandad sang to her. In *The Cherry Tree Carol* Shirley composed a tune to suit the traditional words. *Sweet William* is one of the best known English lyric songs with a variant tune; the words are by Lucy Broadwood and J. Maitland and the tune is arranged by Shirley. *Omie Wise* is an American mountain murder ballad of the type derived from English folk song sources. It comes from Sharp's 'English Folk Songs of the Southern Appalachians', which also provided the words for Shirley's version of *Pretty Saro*. *Blackbirds and Thrushes* and *A Keeper Went Hunting* are English lyric songs from Sharp's collection of 'English Folk Songs'. Shirley composed the tune for a variant of *Polly Vaughan*, the beautiful ballad common to England and Ireland. *Barbara Allen* is the classic and traditional English ballad of love. *Charlie* is a fresh setting of the British-American jingle about Prince Charlie with verses from *Seventeen Come Sunday*. The tune is from Jean Ritchie's 'Singing Family of the Cumberlands' and the extra words are traditional.」
