「作品27の7曲目「Elend（Misery）」にはてこずった。ドイツ語訳の歌詞が音楽とうまく合わないのだ。そこで英語の原詩（ラングストン・ヒューズ）で試してみるとしっくりきた。しかしまだブルースっぽさが出ないので、ちょっとふざけてみることにした。けだるそうに足を組んで、ダミーの煙草をくわえてピアノに向かった。」

ピアノ伴奏のコード・ガーベンと、ソプラノのバーバラ・ボニー、メゾソプラノのアンネ・ゾフィー・フォン・オッター、テノールのハンス・ペーター・ブロッホヴィッツ、バリトンのアンドレアス・シュミットによるツェムリンスキー歌曲集。既出版の全てのピアノ伴奏による歌曲を収録しています。

ツェムリンスキーの再評価が進んだ1980年代は「世紀末ブーム」でもあったので、世紀末ウィーンに関する本も数多く出版されました。そのなかのひとつ、池内紀『ウィーンの世紀末』所収「生きた石像」によると、ウィーンの世紀末とは「現実から逃れて楽しむこと、具体的な関連性をすて、私的な感覚の世界に――夢と可能性の世界にとじこもること」でしたが、本CD所収のツェムリンスキー歌曲もまたそのような世界を体現しているように思います。
