Hunters and guests are gathered before the castle. The young knight, Palemon, joins them.

Act Two 
Mediterranean port

Fishermen mend their nets; sailors prepare a boat; Palemon and Ondine enter and go on board.

Beatrice arrives and throws herself at the lovers' mercy. The lovers hesitate, but the sailors become impatient, as the boat is ready for departure. In the confusion and excitement the lovers decide to take Beatrice with them in the boat

Rocking Dance 
Ondine is in her element. She invokes the wind and the waves, which calm at her will. 
26. V. Pas de trois: Ondine, Palemon, Beatrice  3:08 
Palemon wants to give Ondine the amulet that Beatrice had rejected, but Beatrice snatches it from him. 
27. Variation  0:50 
Beatrice goes to the side of the boat and plays with the amulet. When she leans too far over the side, Tirrenio appears on a wave, seizes the amulet and plunges back under the water. 
28. VI. Vivace  0:40 
Beatrice is furious and confused. The sailors panic. 
29. VII. Molto mosso  1:33 
Ondine expresses her distress in a dance, during which the water sprites begin to call her. In order to pacify Beatrice, Ondine produces a splendid amulet of corals from the sea and presents it to her. 
30. VIII. Finale  3:14 
Beatrice throws the amulet at Ondine's feet; Palemon takes it and throws it into the sea. The water sprites call Ondine, Tirrenio sets loose a storm and brings the distressed Ondine back to him. In despair Palemon attempts to follow Ondine, but is prevented from doing so by the sailors. The storm increases and the ship breaks up. In total darkness, lit only by lightning, Palemon, Beatrice and the crew are seen safe on a rock.

Palemon and Beatrice are to be married. Before the guests arrive he sits alone for a moment in the grand hall of the castle.

A vision of Ondine, weeping under the surface of the water, appears to him. When the vision vanishes Palemon weeps.

Beatrice comes into the hall, waking Palemon from his dreams. Wedding bells are heard. Servants light the candelabras. The arrival of the wedding guests is announced.

At a sign from Tirrenio, he and the Masks bow to the guests and the Masks change into Nymphs and Tritons, creating general bewilderment. The curtains begin to move and the lights flicker as a sudden wind blows up.

Tirrenio takes off his mask. The stage grows darker. More and more Tritons come into the hall. The guests, who have become increasingly frightened, depart in confusion. Complete darkness. Beatrice, a candelabra in her hand, returns to find Palemon, who, enchanted by the presence of Nymphs and Tritons, is awaiting the appearance of Ondine. He refuses to follow Beatrice, throws her to the ground, then turns to watch and wait for Ondine in ardent expectation of her arrival. Beatrice leaves him.

From the depths of the park Ondine comes, weeping, towards the hall.

アーサー・ラッカムによる『ウンディーネ』(ド・ラ・モット・フーケ作)挿絵をあしらったジャケがよいです。
本作が初演された1958年といえばモダンジャズの黄金時代ですが、本作でも宴の場面でパーカッションとピアノを中心に(ややストラヴィンスキーふうの)ジャズっぽい展開を見せています。

本作のテーマは、人間の男性パレモンと人間の女性ベアトリーチェと水の精オンディーナ(ドイツ語だとウンディーネ、フランス語だとオンディーヌ、イタリア語だとオンディーナです)の三角関係ですが、それは要するにいわゆる立派な社会人と人間社会のアウトサイダーのどっちになりたいかという選択の問題です。われわれ人類の祖先は魚なので、人間社会のアウトサイドである海(ロートレアモンふうにいうと「老いたるわだつみ」)こそが人類にとって原初の失われた楽園に他ならないですが、パレモンは本来の故郷である海へ還る決心がつかずに曖昧な態度のままベアトリーチェと結婚することで人間界に留まろうとします。しかしティレニオ(オンディーナの父で地中海の王)の一党が結婚の宴に乗り込んで来て、パレモンはオンディーナに抱擁されつつ死にます(海の精との心中です)。
