Reissue producer's note:
The fourth album to be taped in the Columbia New York Studios by Monk's regular working quartet. This was one of his most efficient efforts for the label. All but two of the tracks heard here were recorded in just two days in October of 1964. This exact lineup, recording together here for the first time, was to remain unchanged for the next four years. The first seven selections, in sequence, were originally released as the album titled simply *Monk.* (CL 2291 monaural; CS 9091). The remaining three are alternates, the first two being takes that are previously unissued.

セロニアス・モンク『モンク』。1965年リリース。
#1、2、4、5、8、10はスタンダード、#3、6、7、9は自作曲。
#7は3月9日録音、#1、4は1964年10月6日録音、#3は10月7日録音、#2、5、6、8、9は10月8日録音。#10の録音年月日は不明です。
メンバーはモンク（ピアノ）、チャーリー・ラウズ（テナー・サックス）、ラリー・ゲイルズ（ベース）、ベン・ライリー（ドラムス）、#4はピアノ・ソロ、#7は前作『イッツ・モンクス・タイム』のセッションからで、ベースはブッチ・ウォーレン。
「「こういいたい、自分のやり方で演奏しなさい、と。大衆が求めるものを演奏してはいけない。自分のやりたい音楽を演奏して、自分のやっていることに大衆の関心や興味を向けさせるようにするんだ。たとえそれまでに一五年、二〇年という歳月がかかったとしても」。」

そういうわけで、本作ではリズム・セクションも安定感があって、モンクはあたかも蝶々を追う子猫のように、やりたいようにやっています。ラウズとも息があっていて、ユニゾンしたりラウズのソロになると黙り込んだりしています。
「他のミュージシャンがソロを取っている時、モンクはピアノの前で突然、踊ってステップを踏んだり、ボディランゲージでグループを指揮したりすることが多くみられた。恍惚の表情を浮かべながら踏むモンクのステップは、バンドの演奏に自分が満足しているという、モンク流の伝達手段だった。」

演奏していない時にも存在感を醸し出してしまうのは、ジャズ界広しといえどもモンクくらいではないでしょうか。
