◆坂本理による解説より◆
「ヘンリー・カウの歴史はふたりのケンブリッジ大生ティム・ホジキンソンとフレッド・フリスがダンス・バンドで知り合ったことに始まる。'68年5月にヘンリー・カウを結成し、当初はブルースのスタンダード・ナンバーを演奏していたと言うが、10月にベーシストとしてアンディ・パウエルが加入したことでバンドの性格が大きく変わることになる。パウエルはソフト・マシーンに感化され、3人でソフト・マシーン・スタイルのプログレッシヴなジャズ・ロックを演奏するようになる。結局パウエルは現代音楽の活動へと進み、'69年4月にはバンドを離れてしまうが、彼がバンドに与えた影響は絶大だった（中略）。残されたふたりはベーシストにジョン・グリーヴスを迎えるが、ドラマーはなかなか定着せず、（中略）'71年9月にクリス・カトラーをドラマーに迎えたことで漸くバンドの活動が軌道に乗ることになる。（中略）一方、バンド加入前からカンタベリーの一派らと接触を持っていたカトラーは、エッグのデイヴ・スチュワート（kb）と共同で「オタワ・ミュージック・カンパニー」を組織していた。そこにヘンリー・カウも合流させ、エッグ、カーン、ヘンリー・カウを中心に22人のロック・オーケストラとしてコンサート活動を行なうなど、ここに後のR.I.O.の原点を見ることができる。ここでバンドと知り合ったカトラーの学友、ジェフ・リー（sax,fl）が'72年3月に加入。こうして『Legend』のメンバーが勢揃いした。」
「'73年5月、（中略）新興レーベルVirginと契約を結んだヘンリー・カウは、5～6月にマナー・スタジオで『Legend』のレコーディングを行ない、9～10月にはドイツのグループ、ファウストとイギリス・ツアーを行なう。（中略）そして、12月のオランダ・ツアーのさなか、ジェフ・リーがバンド脱退を決意し、代わってバンドに加わったのが女性バスーン、オーボエ、サックス奏者、リンジー・クーパーだった。」
