#1「Cortège catalan（カタルーニャの行列）」は1919年に出版されたスペインふう結婚行進曲。セヴラックは1910年にスペイン国境に近いセレに移住しました。 #2「Nymphes au crépuscule（黄昏のニンフ）」は1901年3月に楽譜が完成し、1902年5月にヴァンサン・ダンディによって初演されました。現存する自筆楽譜には不完全な部分があるため、本CD（初録音）ではセヴラック研究家のオルガン奏者ピエール・ギヨーが復元、指揮者ベンツィが決定稿を作成しています。印象主義／ドビュッシーふうの交響詩で、セヴラックによれば「秋の夕暮れ、森のなかの湖のほとりで夢見る羊飼いをニンフが誘惑する、コローの風景画にあるような、自然の印象を喚起させたかった」とのことです。合唱が入っています。 #3-5「3 Recuerdos（三つの思い出）」は#1と同時期の、スペインふうの作品で、カタルーニャ地方の民話を題材にした「I. Bentana de amor（愛の窓）」「II. Cantos de marineros（水夫たちの歌）」「III. Lola la abandonada（捨て子のローラ）」の三曲からなっています。 #6「Pippermint-Get（ピッペルマン・ジェ／ペパーミント・ジェット）」（1907年）は、同名のピアノ曲の作曲者自身によるオーケストラ編曲版で、当時セヴラックが政治活動を通じて知り合った、有名なリキュール「ペパーミント・ジェット」（PippermintはPeppermintの誤字をそのまま商品名化したものです）の製造元ジェット家の一員オーギュスト・ジェット（Auguste Get）に捧げたワルツです。 #7-8「Le Mirage（幻影）」（1903年）は画家オディロン・ルドンの勧めでルドンの友人レオン・ダマール（Léon Damart）の詩に曲をつけた印象主義ふうの歌曲。ソプラノはヤエル・アザレッティ。 #9「Sérénade au clair de lune（月光のセレナード）」は1890年作。本CDでは1913年に出版された第二版によっています。 #10-15「Suite d'après "Le Roi Pinard"（「ピナール王」による組曲）は、不完全な草稿しか残されていないオペレッタ「ピナール王」の音楽を、セヴラックの孫ジルベール（Gilbert Blacque-Belair）の依頼で現代の作曲家イボン・ブレールがオーケストラ用に編曲（1990年）したものです。

「自分の中の、そして自分をとりまくあらゆる音に、つねに耳を傾けること」（listening at all times to all sounds inside of me and around me.）。1956年、24歳のときに母親からテープ・レコーダーをプレゼントされたオリヴェロスは、テープに録音された、普段耳にしているはずなのに気づかずにいた音の多様性にめざめ、「deep listening」（深く耳を傾けること）を提唱するようになります。
音による瞑想（a Sonic Meditation）である#1「Horse Sings From Cloud」（馬は雲から歌う）は、1977年5月にパリのラジオで初演されました。タイトルは「一頭の馬が雲の中で歌っているようだった。馬はどうやってそんなところにいったのだろうと思っていると、数羽の鳥がくちばしに毛布をくわえて降りてきて馬を雲まで連れていった」という夢に由来しています。「一つの音（a tone or sound）を、別の音を出したいという欲求がすっかりなくなるまで（until there is no longer any desire to change it）ずっと出し続けること。そして変化への欲求がなくなったら、新しい音を出すこと」という指示に従って演奏されます。「「Horse Sings From Cloud」によって私は一つの音の深みに耳をすますこと、忍耐することの重要性を学んだ。動きや旋律、ハーモニーといった音楽的衝動に身を任すよりも、一つの音が空間と時間のなかで成長してゆく音の精妙さを敏感に聴き取りたかった。音は身体や心、楽器や演奏空間にとどまり、共鳴する（Horse Sings From Cloud taught me to listen to the depth of a tone and to have patience. Rather than initiating musical impulses of motion, melody and harmony I wanted to heart the subtlety of a tone taking space and time to develop. The tones linger and resonate in the body, mind, instrument and performance space.）」（オリヴェロス）。
#2「Rattlesnake Mountain」（がらがら蛇の山）は、キャッツキル山脈のマウント・トレンパーのアメリカ先住民による呼称で、そのなだらかな山容と、麓の森や草原を吹き渡る風によって引き起こされたオリヴェロスの感情や感覚（the feelings and sensations）が音響化されています。1982年5月作曲。

本CDは1991年にSome Bizarreから出たピーター・ハミルによる「オペラ」『The Fall of the House of Usher』の1999年改訂版（re-recording and remix）で、今回はハミル自身のレーベルFIEからのリリースです。ハミルのソロ作の常連スチュアート・ゴードンが新たにヴァイオリンで参加、エレキギター多重録音によるオーケストレーションが新たに全面的に施され、ヴォーカル（ロデリック・アッシャーのパート）も大部分が再録音されていて、オーケストラをほぼキーボードのみで代用していた旧ヴァージョンに比べてはるかに音の厚みが増しています。

ヴァン・ダー・グラーフ・ジェネレーターのデビュー以前のオリジナル・メンバーだったクリス・ジャッジ・スミス（脚本）の協力のもと、ピーター・ハミルが『アッシャー家の崩壊』に着手したのは1973年、それから18年後の1991年にリリースされた本作は（録音は1989～90年）、ゲスト歌手4人の他はハミルによるヴォーカル＆キーボードの多重録音と打ち込みドラムによる音作りになっていて、「オペラ」というよりはオペラのためのデモテープといった感じです。本作からさらに8年後の1999年にリリースされた改訂版では、ドラムパートを削除して、新たにエレキギターの多重録音を全面的に導入することによってオーケストラ効果を出していて、ハミル自身の歌パートも新たに録音し直されています。 コロス（狂言回し）役のサラ＝ジェーン・モリスはイギリスの歌手で、ブロンスキ・ビートのジミー・ソマーヴィルが1985年に結成したシンセ・ポップ・デュオ、コミュナーズ（The Communards）のヒット・シングル「Don't Leave Me This Way」にゲスト参加していました。ロデリックの友人モントレゾール役のアンディ・ベルは、デペッシュ・モードのヴィンス・クラークが1985年に結成したシンセ・ポップ・バンド「イレイジャー（Erasure）」のヴォーカル。ロデリックの妹マデリン役のリーナ・ラヴィッチは、ニナ・ハーゲンと並ぶニューウェーヴのエキセントリック歌姫、本作の後にもクリス・ジャッジ・スミスのアルバム『オルフェアス（Orfeas）』（2010年）にオルフェウスの妻エウリュディケ役で参加しています。医者（ハーバリスト）役のヘルベルト・グレーネマイヤーは、「ドイツでもっとも人気のある歌手の一人であり、1984年以来発表したすべてのアルバムがドイツのヒットチャート1位を獲得している。また俳優としても『U・ボート』などの映画に出演している」（ウィキペディアより）。
ところで、「アッシャー家」のオペラ化といえば思い浮かぶのはドビュッシー（未完）です。「ポーはロデリック・アッシャーの精神崩壊を家の倒壊と重ね合わせたが、ドビュッシーは次第に自分自身をロデリック・アッシャーと重ね合わせるようになっていった」（ロバート・オーリッジ）。ハミルの「アッシャー家」でも、ロデリックと「家」のパートをハミル自身が担当していて、ロデリックは「家は私だ（The House is I.）」と歌っています。フランスの精神科医がコロナ期の外出禁止中に「壁に向かって話しかけるのは正常だが、壁が返事し出したら統合失調症の徴候だ」とコメントしたということですが、本作では家が歌っています。ロデリックは「私は気違いではない（You may think that I am mad, but it is not so.」と主張してはいますが。しかしながら、「狂気が果たして最も崇高な知性でないものかどうか、輝かしいものの多くが、深遠なもののいっさいが、実は病める思考から、月並みな知性を犠牲にして高められた精神の状態から生じるものでないかどうか、その問題はいまだ未解決なのである」（ポー「エレオノーラ」富士川義之訳より）。
ACT III「The Herbalist」はロックンロール、ACT V 「She is dead」はハバネラのリズムです。
