6. Numinous Pools for Mental Orchestra (1986) 9:55

Notes:
(1) and (5) are settings of texts by Chris Cutler.
(2) is one of four pieces for strings written in Grenoble in spring 1993, the others of which are as yet unperformed.
(3) derives from a larger, abandoned, project "Three Dreams of Descartes", an oratorio in which the philosopher pits his rational self against various personal demons that come wrapped in different kinds of Time.
(4) was written for the HENRY COW group, performed at concerts in 1976-77, but never recorded until now.
(6) was written for real orchestra and later tapped into a compulter & revised for midi instrumentation. This was possible because I'd mostly used the orchestra contrapuntally, for its range of contrasting timbres, rather than going for a massive unified sound. The structure of the piece derives from a complex wave-form, like a single chord, the fluctuations of the partials proving the entry and exit points of different layers of musical material such as boogies, pointillisms, and so on.
Track 1, 3, 4 and 5 recorded and mixed autumn '93 at Wolf Studios, London. All engineering, Dominique Brethes. Except piano on (5) recorded at Premises Studio.

元ヘンリー・カウのティム・ホジキンソン作品集。優れたインプロヴァイザーであるホジキンソンですが、本作では作曲家としての活動に焦点を絞っています。ヘンリー・カウのために作曲されたアヴァン・ロック大曲#4、弦楽四重奏のための現代音楽曲#2、コンピューターを活用したソロ・プロジェクト#3、6、等、ヴァラエティに富んだ内容になっています。
#1、4、5にダグマー・クラウゼ（元アート・ベアーズ／ヘンリー・カウ／スラップ・ハッピー）がヴォイスでフィーチャーされ、ヘンリー・カウ仲間のクリス・カトラー（ドラム #4／作詩 #1、5）とリンジー・クーパー（バスーン #4）、ザ・ワーク仲間のビル・ギロニス（ギター #4）とリック・ウィルソン（ドラム #5）、元ユニヴェル・ゼロ、プレザンのギ・セジュール（ベース #4、5）も参加しています。
聴き所は勿論#4ですが、#3は哲学者デカルトの合理的自我が三つの異なる時間から来た超自然的存在（ダイモン demon）たちと対決する未完のオラトリオ「デカルトの三つの夢」からの抜粋ということで、これはたぶんディケンズの「クリスマス・キャロル」のパロディだと思います。
