◆本CD解説（Philip Pickett）より（大意）◆
13世紀前半にバイエルン公国の南部国境地域で編纂された「カルミナ・ブラーナ」写本は、中世ラテン語抒情詩の最も重要かつ包括的な集成で、その半分以上はこの写本でしか見られないものである。200篇を越す作品が主題別に――教訓的・風刺的な歌、恋歌、食事や飲酒や賭博に関する歌、ゴリヤール（放浪学生）の詩と宗教劇――集められている。
写本は1803年バヴァリアの修道院の「世俗化」にあたって、ベネディクトボイエルンの図書館で発見されたが、猥らで攻撃的な内容を含むものであることを鑑みると、破棄されずに残されていたこと自体が奇跡的といえる。1847年に完全版を出版したJ・H・シュメラーによって「カルミナ・ブラーナ」（ベネディクトボイエルン歌集）と名づけられた。
