「"Father's Lying Dead On The Ironing Board" is a collection of songs which started life in the satirical and political Cabarets of between-the-wars Germany, had new life breathed into them during London's satire movement in the 60's and now, with a new set of arrangements, resonate with their own peculiar cadences. The songs are unique. That is to say, they exist outside our already broad understanding of the constitution of 20th Century popular music while simultaneously drawing on that same rich fund.

Their evolution is perhaps best chronicled in conjunction with the parallel story of their equally unique translator, adaptor and sole interpreter, Agnes Bernelle; from her Berlin childhood to her wartime exile in London and later, her part in the British satire scene, and then to her more recent domicile in Ireland, the songs have travelled and developed with her. They bear the imprint of her own remarkable life.」

アグネス・バーネルは1923年ベルリン生まれ、第2次大戦中にロンドンに移住、その後アイルランドで活動。本作はドイツの詩人ヨアヒム・リンゲルナッツ（1983年生まれ）による1920年代のキャバレー・ソングの歌詞をバーネルが英語にして、作曲家マイケル・ドレス（1935年ベルリン生まれ）が曲を付けたものが中心になっています。
エルヴィス・コステロやフィリップ・シェヴロン（ザ・ポーグス）、当時のワールド・ミュージックの最先端バンド「3 ムスタファズ 3」の参加が目を引きます。1980年代後半、ブレヒト・ソング＆キャバレー・ソングの分野ではウテ・レンパーの華々しい活躍がありましたが、個人的にはアグネス・バーネルのマイナーでありながらジャンルを超えたいぶし銀的アプローチが好ましいです。
