「Formed in the summer of 1972 and named after a motorway road sign, Hatfield and the North gigged extensively in the UK and Europe and recorded two albums (*Hatfield and the North* and *The Rotters' Club*) before breaking up in 1975. The band also recorded four sessions for BBC Radio 1 and appeared on French TV. This album is a collection of hitherto unreleased material performed exclusively by the classic '70s Hatfield line-up.」

「Dave Stewart: In the '60s there was a fashion to give girl groups cheesy names like The Marvelettes, The Ronettes (etc.), so we jokingly referred to our three female guest vocalists as The Northettes. A lot of our fan mail was about them. They added an extra human dimension to our music and helped give it its character.
Barbara Gaskin: By an odd coincidence I was born and grew up in Hatfield. In 1973 I was living in Canterbury and was busy working with 'psychedelic folk' group Spirogyra when Dave Stewart invited me to sing on the first Hatfield album along with Amanda Parsons and Ann Rosenthal. The three of us never actually sang together in the studio, but leaned and recorded our parts separately. ( . . . ) The astonishing and hugely rewarding thing was to sing the parts over the backing tracks in the studio and then hear them all played back together. It created a beautiful, often breathtaking and I think genuinely original effect.」
