◆本CD解説（マンロウ）より◆
「この2枚のCDは、レオニヌス Leoninus のオルガヌム（おそらく1160年から1170年の間に作曲された）にはじまり、シャンティイ写本 Chantilly Codex （1380－1390年頃編集された）からのモテトゥスに終わる、200年以上にわたる時代の、グレゴリオ聖歌に基づくポリフォニー音楽の歴史をたどるものである。この時代は、古楽の歴史における最も波乱に富んだ時代のひとつであった。計量化された多声音楽の誕生とその急速な発展が、この時代に含まれるからである。発展の中心はまずパリであったが、14世紀のはじめにはすでに、フランスばかりでなくイタリアやイギリスにも、独自の個性をもった楽派が栄えていた。そして、中世ポリフォニーの主要形式が確立されていた。（中略）しかし、このレコーディングに選ばれた作品はすべてフランスで書かれたもので、しかも、グレゴリオ聖歌をテノールとして用いるという共通の特徴をもっている（一部、聖歌を代用するテノール、いわゆる代用聖歌を用いている曲もある）。それらは、音楽構成の発展の心魅了するプロセスを示しているばかりでなく、同時に歴史そのものの発展の形をも示している。モテトゥスの進歩に集約されている、宗教的環境から世俗的環境への移行は、純音楽的な発展というものがいかにその時代の社会的・経済的・政治的ファクターに依存していたかを、まざまざと示してくれるのである。」
