ピエール・ブーレーズ指揮シカゴ交響楽団・合唱団によるバルトーク「中国の不思議な役人」（パントマイム、1918～24）と「弦楽器、打楽器とチェレスタのための音楽」（1943年）の1994年新録音盤（旧録音は「役人」が1971年ニューヨーク・フィル、「弦チェレ」が1967年BBC交響楽団）。
三人の悪党が少女に客引をさせる。三人の客が登場するが、第一の老人と第二の青年は金を持っていないので悪党に追い払われる。悪党たちは第三の「中国の役人（Mandarin）」を殺して金を奪おうとするが、三度殺害を試みるも役人は不死身で、シャンデリアのフックに吊るされた役人は青緑色の光を放つ。しかし少女が役人を抱くと役人は傷口から血を流して死ぬ。という、グランギニョールふうな筋書ですが、この「中国の役人」が「宦官」か否かということでいえば、これは宦官であるべきで、第一の老人は老齢ゆえに、第二の青年は内気さゆえに、そして第三の中国人は宦官ゆえに「不能」であり、愛を求めつつも成就できない、ということになって、グロテスクな流血犯罪劇は一転して殉教劇になり、聖なる「中国の不思議な役人」は後光を発する、それゆえに「三」という数（聖数）へのこだわりも意味を持つわけで、そうでなければ単なる人種的偏見に基づくエキゾティシズムに過ぎなくなってしまいます。
