「英国フォーク史上最重要の作品がついにCD化された。イングランドの名トラッド歌手シャーリー・コリンズと、英国フォーク界最初のギターの鬼才デイヴィー・グレアムが64年に製作（発表は65年2月）した本盤である。その重要さにもかかわらず本作は、80年にマイナー・レーベルから一時リイシューされただけで、長らく入手困難になっていたのだった。ともあれ本作を一聴すれば誰もが驚嘆されるだろう、「あのペンタングルに先立つ数年前に既にこの様な驚異の音楽が存在したのか」と。英米のトラッドをブルースやジャズ（更にインド音楽などの）のイディオムに基づいたギターで伴奏するという、全く新しい音楽が６０年代の前半に存在していたのだ。」
「数年間デイヴィーはモロッコやタンジールなどを旅する。この時に出会ったウード（リュート系の楽器）をヒントにしてDADGADという新しいフォーク・ギターのチューニングを発明したと言われている。モード的な響きを持つDADGADはアイリッシュのエアーなど英国諸島のトラッド音楽によく合う為にまたたく間に広まった。ジョン・レンボーンは「デイヴィーはもしDADGADの発明以外に殆ど何もしなかったとしても永遠不滅だろう」と書いている。」

「It was Austin John Marshall who came up with the idea of an LP that crystallised the eclectic musical partnership of Davy Graham and Shirley Collins. They had already been working together in performance, developing some of the repertoire you hear on this album, and the combination of Davy's playing and Shirley's voice was attracting considerable attention in packed clubs and concerts around the UK in the early sixties. *Folk Roots, New Routes* was released on the Decca label in 1964 and has since become a landmark in the history of folk rock.」
「But it also represents a turning point in both artists' careers. For Shirley it represented the last throes of her interest in American music, allowing her to focus on being the English singer she wanted to be. For Davy, it was the start of a recording career through which he explored his own kind of 'world music' long before the term was invented.」
