◆Robert Mealyによる解説より（大意）◆
13世紀北フランスのトルヴェールは、12世紀南フランスのトルバドゥールから受け継いだ主題と技法に、春の田園での恋の楽しみを喚起させる快活と優美を付け加えた。
トルヴェールが好んだジャンルにはカロル（carole）のような踊りのための詩形があり、男女が輪になってコール＆レスポンスするもので、歌詞は春の野辺での踊りとそれに伴う喜びを表現している。
本CDのタイトルはトルヴェールが好んだ別の詩形パストゥレイユ（pastourelle）から来ていて、若い女性（羊飼い娘）が森で騎士に出会ってからのありがちの出来事が歌われるが、ここではレー（lai）の形式を取った「Lai de la pastourelle」がインストで演奏されている。
それらは春の屋外を舞台にしているが、シャンソン・ド・トワル（chanson de toile）は屋内での機織り歌で、遠方の恋人を偲ぶ女性が語り手（歌い手）になっている。
名前が伝わっているトルヴェールには、コノン・ド・ベテュヌのような十字軍に加わった貴族や、アダン・ド・ラ・アルのような裕福な市民がいた。
そして「最後のトルヴェール」と呼ばれた中世フランス最大の作曲家ギョーム・ド・マショーの作品で本CDは締め括られる。

ボストン・カメラータ、プロジェクト・アルス・ノヴァ（P.A.N.）、アンサンブル・アルカトラズなどで活動していたメンバーによって1996年に結成されたニューヨークの男女4人組中世音楽アンサンブル「フォーチュンズ・ホイール（運命の輪）」の第1作『パストゥレイユ：マショーとトルヴェールの芸術』（2001年録音）。中世フィドル＆ハープのシンプルかつ流麗な演奏がよいです。
