◆本CD解説より（大意）◆

ヨーロッパ大陸における世俗曲および宗教曲の膨大な集成に比べると、15世紀になるまでのイギリスの音楽はほとんど現存していない。残されているものも個人の控えのようなものである。
「イギリスふうの」様式とはどのようなものなのか？　残されたレパートリーから判断するに、モノフォニーの歌では、イギリスの宮廷恋愛歌とフランスのそれとのあいだに大きな違いはなくて、それもそのはずで、イギリスとフランスの貴族のあいだには密接なつながりがあり、中世を通じてイギリスの宮廷ではフランス語が支配的な言語であった。
ラテン語の歌は学者たちのあいだでは世俗的なものも宗教的なものもふつうに用いられていた。
イギリスのポリフォニー音楽の主要なものはウスター写本（Worcester Fragments）に収められていて、13世紀初頭から14世紀中葉までの聖歌、モテット、コンドゥクトゥスが含まれているが、そこにはノートルダム楽派の影響を受けていない、明確な「イギリスふうの」様式がうかがわれる。
ではその「イギリス性 Englishness」がどのようなものかというと、長調の優位、ドリア旋法、三和音のポリフォニーの強調であるが、最後の、音楽理論家たちが三度と六度の音程は汚くて耳障りだと主張していた時代に、イギリスでは二声・三声・四声の音楽にそれらが自由に使用されていたという点はとりわけ重要である。

◆本CDについて◆

ブックレット（全44頁）に William Lyons による解説（英語原文、仏・独訳）、演奏者紹介（英・仏・独）、歌詞（ラテン語・中英語原文、仏・独・英訳）。

ザ・デュファイ・コレクティヴによる中世イギリス歌曲集（「Miri It Is」は、夏のあいだは楽しいが、やがて厳しい冬が来る、といった内容の歌です）。これはサード・アルバムで、前二作は器楽曲メインの、演奏性を重視した作風でしたが、今回は歌（男声）がメインの、やや渋めの内容になっています。ゲストは当時ヒリヤード・アンサンブルのメンバーだったジョン・ポッターで（ヒリヤード・アンサンブルにも同傾向のアルバム『Sumer Is Icumen In』（夏は来たりぬ）があります）、この人はかつてザ・フーと共演していたり、近年ではバリー・ガイ／ジョン・サーマンの「ダウランド・プロジェクト」でも活躍するなどしています。
