◆本CD解説（Christopher Hogwood）より（大意）◆

エリザベス朝の教養ある「ジェントルマン」の家庭できかれたであろう音楽が、このCDの前半（#1-10）に収められている。声楽コンソート、ヴィオールコンソート、リュート二重奏、ヴァージナル曲（エリザベス女王も一人でいる時にメランコリーを追い払うために自ら演奏した）などであるが、鍵盤楽器よりリュートのレパートリーの方が広範であり、打ち解けた社交の場にふさわしかった。さらにイタリア直輸入のマドリガルに英語の歌詞をあてたもの（#5）など。
無骨で粗野な音楽となると、これは「プロ」の領分であって、吹奏楽団や、町の合唱隊によるブロードサイド・バラッドなどといったものが、このCDの後半（#11-22）を占めている。

ブックレット（全20頁）にクリストファー・ホグウッドによる英文解説、歌詞（英語）、写真図版（モノクロ）1点。

ホグウッド指揮「エンシェント室内管弦楽団」こと「古楽アカデミー」（The Academy of Ancient Music）による『エリザベス朝時代の音楽』。1978年の録音です。
本作は、エリザベス朝音楽サンプラーというか、音絵巻というか、エリザベス朝のさまざまなジャンルの音楽を一枚に盛り込んだ、ディヴィッド・マンロウふうの啓蒙路線です。
#21「Martyn said to his man」は酔っ払いバラッドで、鼠が猫を追っかけただとか、牡牛の乳をしぼるだとか、「逆さまの世界」の、ありえないことを言い合う戯れ歌ですが、歌唱のほうもそれっぽくなっています。
