Par fumee, je les desmentiroye;
Et no[n]pourquant ja mais ne fumeroye;
De fumee qui fust contre rayson.
Se je fume, c'est ma compleccion
Quolerique qu'ainsi me fayt fumer.
Je fumeray sanz personne graver,
C'est bien fumé; if n'i a point d'outrayge
Quant on fume sans fayre autruy damage.
Since I am smoky, full of smoke,
Smoke I must, for, if I did not smoke,
Those who call me smoke-head,
By reason of smoke, I would prove them wrong.
And yet never would I smoke
Any smoke that might be against reason.
If I smoke, it is just my choleric
Temperament that makes me smoke that way.
I will smoke without hurting anyone.
It's well smoked; there is no outrage done
When one smokes without harming another. 」
Fumeux fume
「Fumeux fume par fumee
Fumeuse speculacion.
Qu'antre fummest sa pensee
Fumeux [fume par fumee].
Quar fumer molt li agree
Tant qu'il ait son entencion
[Fumeux fume par fumee
Fumeuse speculation].
A smoker smokes through smoke.
A smoky speculation.
Is, between puffs, his thought:
A smoker smokes through smoke.
For smoking suits him very well
As long as he keeps his intention.
A smoker smokes through smoke -
A smoky speculatio.」
Par maintes foys
「I.
Tue tue tue tue oci oci
Oci oci oci oci oci oci
Fi de li, fi de li, fi de li, fi,
Oci oci oci oci oci
Many a time I have enjoyed
The sweet tune of the nightingale,
But the cuckoo never wants to sing in tune with it
But for envy wants to sing against her,
"Cuckoo, cuckoo, cuckoo" all his life,
For he really wants to bring discord to her song.
And yet the nightingale cries out and says,
"I command you to kill and slay him,
Kill, kill, kill, kill, slay, slay,
Fie on him, fie on him, fie,
Slay, slay, slay, slay, slay,
Slay, slay, slay, slay, fie, fie,
Fie on the cuckoo who tries to speak of love."」
「II.
Si vous suppli, ma tres douce alouette,
Que vous voullés dire vostre chanson:
"Lire lire lire lire lirelon
Que dit Dieu Dieu,
Que te dit Dieu,
[Que dit Dieu Dieu,]
Que te dit Dieu Dieu,
Que te dit Dieu Dieu,
Que te dit Dieu DIeu,"
Il est tamps, il est [tamps]
Que le roussinolet die sa chansounette:
"Oci oci oci oci oci oci oci oci
Oci seront qui vos vont guerroyant."
So I beg of you, my sweet lark,
That in your song you will say,
"Tra la, tra la, tra la la,
What does God say,
What says He to you,
What says He to you,
What says He to you."
It is time, it is time
That the nightingale says her little song,
"Slay, slay, slay, slay, slay, slay, slay, slay,
Slain will be those who war against you."」
「III.
Assemblés vous; prenés la cardinette,
Faites chanter la calle et le sanson,
Tués, batés se cucu pile bis son
Il est pris pris,
Il est pris pris
Or soit mis mort
Soit mis a mort mort,
Soit dist il mort mort,
Soit mis a mort mort.
Or aloms seurement
An joli ver vos quer[és] cullir la mosette
Ami ami ami ami ami ami ami ami
Toudis seray le dieux d'amours priant.
Gather together, take the cardinal,
Make the quail sing, and the starling;
Kill, beat if the cuckoo grinds brown bran;
He is caught, caught,
He is caught, caught,
Let him be put to death,
Be put to death, death,
Let him be (says he) dead, dead,
Be put to death, death.
Now let us safely go
In pretty springtime to pick the hazelnut.
Friend, friend, friend, friend, friend, friend, friend, friend,
I will ever be praying to the god of love.」
